Johnston Press plc has launched free football smartphone apps for 11 titles around the Group.
The apps feature everything fans need to follow their favourite team including the latest stats, live match updates, team line-ups, and league tables. They also contain in-depth local editorial coverage from expert football journalists, updated daily and with match reports after games.
In addition, Twitter is incorporated into the apps, with fans able to read and reply to the latest relevant local football tweets, including from the local newspaper and reporters, players, clubs and other supporters.
The 11 titles with apps are:
- The Yorkshire Post Android iPhone
- The Yorkshire Evening Post Android iPhone
- The Sunderland Echo Android iPhone
- The Sheffield Star Android iPhone
- Wigan Evening Post Android iPhone
- The News (Portsmouth) Android iPhone
- The Blackpool Gazette Android iPhone
- The Lancashire Evening Post Android iPhone
- The Burnley Express Android iPhone
- The Milton Keynes Citizen Android iPhone
- The Peterborough Telegraph Android iPhone
Announcing the launch, Digital and Business Development Director Henry Faure Walker said: “The football apps offer an excellent, innovative way for fans to follow their local teams via their Johnston Press title. These smartphone apps follow hot on the heels of our iPad apps for The Scotsman and Yorkshire Post which we launched earlier this year.”
Each app features four sections:
News - the latest stories and pictures from football clubs in each title’s area, including pre and post-match analysis. All content can be shared using Facebook, Twitter or email.
Twitter – tweets from the publication’s football writers and from the region's clubs, players and fans.
Live – minute-by-minute text updates and live stats of every match in play across all divisions, leagues and competitions.
Stats – competition tables, full match stats from current and past games, including results, bookings, team line-ups, and squad information.
The launch of the football apps comes just weeks after the successful roll-outs of innovative iPad apps for The Scotsman and Yorkshire Post titles. These apps feature live content updated throughout each day, including videos and slideshows, as well as full page-turning editions of the daily newspaper.
Since their launch in late January and March 2012 respectively, the two apps have been downloaded more than 10,000 times, with a significant number of users choosing to subscribe to The Scotsman app for £7.99 per month after the 30-day free trial period.
Similar iPad apps for other Johnston Press titles are currently in the pipeline, and will be launched over the coming months.
Both the iPad and football phone apps have been built for Johnston Press by YOC Ltd.
